About Home Fuel Math
Home Fuel Math is a small, independent site of free calculators for people who heat with oil, propane, pellets or firewood. It started from a simple frustration: the answers to everyday questions like "how many gallons is 18 inches in my tank?" or "how long will a 20 lb tank run my Buddy heater?" were scattered across dealer PDFs, owner's manuals and forum threads.
How the tools are built
- Published data first. Tank charts, appliance Btu ratings and generator fuel rates come from manufacturers' charts, manuals and spec sheets. Fuel energy content and average household use come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Each page lists its sources.
- Formulas in the open. Every calculator shows the math it uses, so you can check it or do it by hand.
- Tested. The calculations are checked against hand-worked examples and against the published charts they're based on before each update.
- Private by design. The calculators run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or stored.
Limits
The results are estimates for planning. Real tanks, appliances and homes vary, and prices change constantly. For safety questions, equipment sizing or anything involving gas lines, tanks or burners, talk to your fuel supplier or a licensed professional. See our terms and disclaimer.
Corrections
If you spot a number that looks wrong, or a tank or appliance you'd like added, please get in touch. Corrections backed by a chart, manual or spec sheet are especially welcome.
